What Luke Said . . .
There are lots and lots of reasons why I decided to be baptised, so I'm just going to give four points that always always helped me in my faith through life and guided me towards my decision.
1 Timothy 4 v.10-13 ". . . we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, and especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching."
I was reading this when I was considering baptism and thinking about setting the example and about the symbol that baptism is to everyone. Hebrews 2: 12-13 says: "I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises." And again, "I will put my trust in him."
Next is something that always helps me out: It's by a philospher from 16th century France, Blaise Pascal. He suggests you imagine two scenarios . . . The first scenario is that I believe in God and after-life and redemption, but person B doesn't. We both die; there isn't an after life; we both lose. But the other scenario is that we both die; there is an after-life and I win - but the other person still loses! That really helped me in my faith because it's just a logical conclusion.
And a last reading: This is probably my favourite passage in the whole Bible. I'm always turning to it and reading it. It's Ecclesiastes 11: 9:
"Be happy, young man, while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you to judgment."
I'm always considering that. I'm always trying to live my life not just to enjoy myself but always remembering that.
So, Luke, why this song?
Simply, this is my favourite song!
