Is Valentine's Day a 'Christian' idea?
The religious police in Saudi Arabia decided it was - and created a black market for roses and wrapping paper in 2002 and 2008, by banning the sale of all Valentine's Day merchandise - including anything coloured red. And this year Iran's printing works owners' union banned the printing and distribution of cards, gifts, teddy bears, posters, boxes printed with hearts or half-hearts and red roses.
But Valentine's Day is not actually a Christian celebration - it's just a welcome bit of fun to cheer up a sometimes dreary month (unless we make more of it in our own minds).
So, can we see God anywhere in the celebration? In a way, we can. He designed people to be in relationships. Relationships are a crucial part of our being - and when they go wrong . . . don't we know it!
Well . .. actually . . . not always! Sometimes we can actually fail to notice that a relationship has gone wrong. Our hearts can deceive us.
For your heart's sake - don't bury your head in the sand. Celebrate right relationships. Fix broken ones.
God is there to help. He says: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness" Getting a right relationship with God is a good place to start.
He's ready and waiting to mend our broken hearts. He made a promise each one of us: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you".
