Latvia Trip

Andy's Trip with Crossbow Ministries

The news that Andy was to work with children at the Ganchauskas summer "English Speaking Camp" in Latvia has caused a lot of interest in the church. This is Andy's first 'Christian work' trip and, having arranged the trip 'privately' with Graham Reed at Crossbow Ministries, he's finding the support offered by the church both a surprise and a real encouragement!

Andy's preparations started a few months ago with a set of innoculations (including Hepatitis A, Rabies and Tick Borne Encephalitis), a couple of meetings with the team in Dronfield and the planning of activities.

UPDATE

Andy is now home again and
his BLOG is online!

Finally, on Friday, Andy met up with half of the team at Manchester Airport - ready to go! (The other half, including Graham's family, were flying from Stansted.)

His very lumpy rucksack (bound with blue polypropylene rope) appeared to check in a without problem - he'd weighed everything very carefully to ensure he was under weight. We'll have to wait for an update to see what happened when they x-rayed his rucksack and hand luggage! I'm not sure how many tools he decided to take in the end - one of his tasks is to work with a different group of children for part of each day, and he's designed a 'Forest Fitness Course' project which involves the use of a lot of rope, fallen (or cut) branches and physical energy! The night before his departure he was still making the five laminated posters explaining how to use each exercise station - calling upon his sister's physiotherapy skills for drawing stickman representations of his chosen exercises.

The idea of this project (and the other camp activities) is to help improve the children's English and to encourage them to talk about Jesus. Chatting with the rest of the team suggests that it will be a lot of fun too - most of them have been before. Most of the other team members know each other - Andy is a 'stranger' thrown into the fray! But he seems to have the attitude that you can't really be a stranger amongst Christians, and he's very keen to go willingly wherever God sends him - an attitude the church is supporting very well!

Our grateful thanks to everyone - you have contributed gifts and enthusiasm in abundance.
